Trade Deadline Thoughts

Several trades took place today before we hit the trade deadline at 4:00 ET.  I’m not going to cover all of the trades here, but you can check out MLB Trade Rumors for all of the trade news.  For now, I just want to talk about a few of the trades that stick out to [...]

Cubs Acquire Grabow, Gorzellany from Pirates

The Cubs scored a dozen runs against the Astros for the second day in a row, but it was the news that was announced after the game that is getting the headlines.  MLB.com is reporting that the Cubs acquired lefty relief pitcher John  Grabow and LHP Tom Gorzellany from the Pirates in exchange for RHP [...]

Good News and Bad News for Soriano and The Cubs

The bad news is that Alfonso Soriano had a pretty bad night, going 1-for-6 with three strikeouts.  The good news is that his one hit was a 13th inning game winning grand slam that gave the Cubs a 5-1 win. Carlos Zambrano got the start for the Cubs and pitched well, going 7.0 innings and [...]

Cubs Take Over First Place

After their 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, the Cubs found themselves all alone in first place in the NL Central.  The sweep of the Reds coupled with the Cardinals loss at Philadelphia catapulted the Cubs into the division lead. Rich Harden earned the victory on Sunday by pitching 6.0 innings of one [...]

Cubs Win First Two Against Reds

The Cubs have taken the first two games against the Reds by scores of 8-5 (Friday) and 5-3 (Saturday).  In the Cubs last nine games since the All-Star break, they are 7-2. In the two games against the Reds, Alfonso Soriano is  4-for-8 with a homerun and an RBI.  It’s an incredibly small sample size, [...]

Cubs Win Finale in Philly

The Cubs salvaged the final game of their series in Philadelphia by beating the Phillies 10-5.  Carlos Zambrano earned the victory to improve his record to 7-4.  Kevin Gregg picked up his 19th save of the year.  Ryan Theriot went 3-5 and scored two runs, while Aramis Ramizez was 2-4 with a double, two runs [...]

Cubs Lose 10-1 to Phillies

My hope was that the Cubs would cruise into Philly riding high on their four game sweep of the Nationals and promptly sweep the World Champion Phillies.  Instead, they swaggered into Philly and promptly got thumped 10-1.  It was an ugly game, from Ted Lilly giving up seven earned runs in four innings (maybe his knee [...]

Cubs Sweep Nationals

The Cubs started the second half of the season by sweeping the Nationals in a four game series in Washington.  Granted, the Nationals aren’t very good, but a four game sweep is still a very nice feat. In Sunday’s game, the Cubs offense exploded for eleven runs to beat the Nationals 11-3.  Micah Hoffpauir, Jake [...]

Sunday Update

Just a quick update to say that the Cubs won last night 6-5.  Randy Wells got the win, although he didn’t look stellar.  Kosuke Fukudome batted leadoff again and went 2-4 with a triple and a walk.  Alfonso Soriano batted fifth again and smacked a three-run homerun in the sixth inning.  Some guy named Mike Fontenot [...]

More Injuries For The Cubs

The Cubs beat the Nationals last night 3-1 behind the pitching of Carlos Zambrano and a surpringly effective bullpen.  Zambrano went five innings scattering four hits, allowed one run, struck out six and walked four.  He was effective, but had he been facing a team other than Washington, the results may have been different. Beginning [...]
