Randy Wells looked great again in the first game against Atlanta. He pitched 7.0 innings giving up just two hits and two earned runs. Unfortunately, the bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth and nineth innnings to allow the Braves to tie the game and then go on to win it in the 12th inning.
Derrick Lee went 2-5 including a homerun and two RBI to lead the Cubs in defeat. His batting feats also removed him from the sub-.250 club. Alfonso Soriano hit a leadoff homerun to give the Cubs the lead in the first, but the bullpen made sure that the early lead was in vain. The Cubs ended up losing the game in 12 innings 6-5.
The news was better in the second game of the series. Ted Lilly pitched 7.0 innings giving up six hits and one earned run on his way to a 3-2 Cubs victory. Unfortunately for Lilly, he didn’t get the victory. That honor went to Angel Guzman who pitched two innings of scoreless baseball.
The Cubs won the game in the 11th inning on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Micah Hoffpauir. Mike Fontenot’s fourth inning double provided the Cubs’ other two runs. Derrick Lee added two more hits in three at-bats to raise his average to .262.
The third game of the series was rained out and will be played on June 22, a mutual off-day for both teams.
